Have you stopped to smell the roses lately? Research has shown that not only do flowers provide aesthetic beauty, but they are also increase performance and overall mood. Sometimes it is the very simple pleasures in life that give us a feeling of happiness, but many of us fail to realize this.

We get caught up in allowing society to dictate our happiness. We allow the media to say what it is that we need in order to feel happy. But is/are these things what really make us happy? If you ask people what happiness is, everyone will have different answers.

Some people will focus on material assets while others focus on intangible objects like popularity, acceptance or power. But have they really thought about whether these items would bring them the genuine happiness they desire once they obtain them?

Many people will obtain these intangible and tangible objects and believe these items will make them feel happy, but often the opposite is what happens. When we try so hard to obtain something and have high expectations for what we will experience we are often disappointed. This is because when do not experience that euphoric feeling that we thought we would we begin searching for something else that we think will make us feel that way.

Therefore, we become restless in hopes of finding that one thing that will bring us genuine happiness. Often this never happens, because we are too focused on chasing after that euphoric feeling.

The fact is many of us are after happiness because in a way we are brought up thinking that we have to search for it to find it. But is this really the case? Why is it that we must not feel settled until we go searching for something?

Often happiness is happening all around us but we do not pay attention to it. We do not allow ourselves to enjoy the many things in life that bring happiness to us. It could be as simple as seeing your child or children speak his/her first word, or it could be receiving credit at work for a job well done. It could be as simple as not having to stand in line at the store.

It is many life events that happen to us, but we fail to put these events in perspective because we are too busy focusing on other factors that are supposed to make us happy.

Not only do we set ourselves up to fail, but we are allowing the important events in our lives to pass us by without taking notice. When we learn to give everything our all and focus on what is happening in front of us or around us that is when happiness can be experienced.

When we learn to focus more on our life that is happening instantaneously we will learn to be happier. This is because we have come to realize the beauty of life and everything it has to offer. No matter how big or small the rewards are.
